10 Ways to Make Sure You Love Your Outfit Before You Leave the House

Some days it can be a struggle to pull together a great outfit. Here are 10 questions I often ask myself when putting together my look. Take a look and see if there are a few questions you want to adopt into your dressing routine to help you find your style in the morning.

Before you open your closet
  • What do you primarily need out of your clothes today: What’s the biggest emotional need you’re craving from your outfit. Do you feel like you want to blend in, make your personality known, feel cozy and comforted? It’ll be different day to day.

  • Remind yourself what you will do in the outfit that day: If you’re going to be giving a big presentation at work maybe you need something professional. If you’re going to be working with kids maybe you need something that allows you to move easily and isn’t prone to stains.

  • How much time do you have to get dressed: Some days you might be scrambling. On those days sticking with a tried and true outfit is helpful. Dresses also remove the stress of matching tops and bottoms when you’re already running behind. Save the experimental combos for days with some wiggle room in the schedule.

While you’re perusing your wardrobe
  • What part of your personality is coming through today: Maybe you feel youthful and playful, so you want something bright and flirty. Maybe you feel a bit snarky and want to go with a dark color palette.

  • What kind of body image day are you having: If you’re feeling confident maybe it’s the day for the more revealing or tight outfit. If you’re struggling it might be better to grab a staple that you know you always feel good in.

Once you’re dressed
  • Do you feel physically comfortable: If something feels scratchy, tight, etc. you’re going to be squirming all day and never feel 100% confident. Consider taking the offending item off and trying again.

  • Do like the shape of the outfit on your body: You’re going to have days when you don’t feel good about your body, but does the outfit make you feel more or less positive about your shape. The answer should always be more positive.

  • Are you complimenting the outfit with styling: Hair, accessories, and makeup make an impact on how you feel in an outfit. You don’t have to prioritize these extra elements, but if you feel like your jewelry doesn’t match the style or you’re just not feeling good about your hair, your time might be better spent tackling those than swapping for another outfit.

  • Did you capture your mood correctly: Now that you’re dressed, did you capture the parts of your personality you felt coming through before picking your clothes. You can put on an outfit that is objectively cute and that you love other days, but if it’s not right for your mood that day you might not feel stylish.

  • Do you feel like you: This can be hard to answer if you’re not used to dressing for your personality, but you can start figuring it out with simpler questions. Do you feel happy? If you saw someone else wearing your outfit would you think it was awesome? Is the outfit giving you extra confidence or making you feel more powerful?

This last question is the king of the queries. Feeling like yourself is the most important part of curating your style. Hopefully this list makes getting dressed in the morning a little easier and possibly more fun.
