Changing Seasons & Style Permission

Spring officially starts tomorrow. Woohoo! It feels like a huge relief to me. On the surface, it feels silly that it matters so much. It’s not as if the weather is suddenly going to change and I’ll be strutting around in shorts. Really it’s just another day in a slow (it feels SO SLOW) transition to warmer, sunnier days.
But the promise of a change is meaningful. I hear people use the word boredom this time of year when referring to their wardrobe. They’re bored of wearing the same thing, they just want a change. They just want something different.
I think it's true that we want something different, but boredom is too simplistic.
The change in weather forces a wardrobe change, but wardrobe changes are more than keeping ourselves entertained.
We tend to pigeon hole people into style types. “She dresses preppy” and “They have hipster energy”. We attach a single style to each person.
But our wardrobe ideally emulates our identity and our identities are so multifaceted. We have different roles - your self at work, your self with friends, and so on. We have a variety of mental states that materialize differently day to day - some days we feel brave, others we feel quiet and protective. Our bodies have different needs too - sometimes we want to cozy up in thick sweater, while others we want something airy and loose.
If clothing feels best when it expresses who we are, then it makes sense we crave variety in our wardrobe. Our expression of self needs to shift to align with who we are each day.
So it’s no surprise to me that in a world that wants to peg people as one identity, the promise of something different brings a breath of relief.
The bigger work is making space for ourselves and others to have fluid style, but that’s a lengthy topic for another newsletter.
For today, I think it’s worth taking the refreshed feeling generated by spring at face value. Allow yourself to feel the version of yourself that it brings.
Happy spring!
