Corsets Are Empowering

I have been falling more and more in love with corsets.

It's one of those cycles where the more I learn, the more I love, and I can't get enough. And one of the biggest reasons for that is simple: corsets are incredibly empowering.

I have many reasons why that's true. Let me explain.

When you wear a corset, you become in charge of the shape of your body and the shape you want to show the world. That flips how a lot of women feel like they have to approach fashion. So many women — especially those in larger bodies — approach getting dressed around hiding parts of themselves. Corsets turn that on its head entirely. It's not about hiding. It's about this is what I want you to see. This is how I want to present myself.

They are decadent. They call attention. A corset is a physical representation of a refusal to be quiet, a refusal to be invisible, shoved in a corner, a footnote. No — I am here, I am impactful, I am beautiful. You cannot ignore me.

Part of that "you cannot ignore me" is calling attention to the feminine form. In today's fashion, corsets bring focus to the female body. They are not an attempt to hide it. Yes, corsets are manipulating the shape of our bodies, but that creates a conversation rather that making the female form something we can hide from.

Just like a woman's body, their is vast variety within corsets. They can be short or long, hyper curvy or tubular. They can push the bust up or squish everything down. They can close with a front busk, lacing, or a zipper. They can be adorned with flossing details, be made from so many different types of fabric, and be inspired by any number of time periods. Every woman can have a corset that matches her aesthetic. The uniqueness of corsets reflects the uniqueness of women, and I love that reflection.

This next one might seem small, but I've experienced it's impact; corsets literally make you sit up straighter. If you're someone who curves inward and makes yourself smaller, a corset puts your shoulders back and your spine straight. I am here. I have found personally that being in corset and being forced to stand up straighter made me feel so confident it felt easier to walk into a room of strangers.

There's also something to be said for the rebellion of it. We're not in an era that expects women to wear corsets. There's a quiet defiance in doing it anyway. I know this doesn't align with current fashion expectations. I'm going to do it anyway. That's powerful.

No matter which angle you come at it from, there's an angle of empowerment to be found.

I believe self-empowerment is a core pillar of good personal style. Good style is built on the foundation of showing up authentically. And corsets drip in self-empowerment and fit so perfectly into what I love about creating custom pieces. It's all about creating a garment that supports that badassery that already exists in women and creating a path for it to shoot out into the world.

Not everyone sees corsets this way. If you don't, no hard feelings. But not a single one of the reasons I just listed makes you think corsets are empowering...?
