Designing Your Perfect Dress: Start with These 3 Questions

Designing a dress that you’ll truly love starts with asking the right questions. These are the same questions I ask every client at the beginning of our design consultation. They help guide the creative process and ensure that the final product is something that not only looks great but also feels perfect for them. Here are the three key questions you should consider before starting any dress design:

1. Where Do You Want to Wear the Dress?
The first step is to think about the purpose of the dress. Is it meant to be a versatile staple in your wardrobe, or is it for a specific event like a friend’s wedding or a milestone celebration? Understanding where you plan to wear the dress helps determine everything from the fabric choice to the level of formality, ensuring the design aligns with your needs.

2. How Do You Want to Feel in the Dress?
Next, consider how you want to feel when you’re wearing the dress. Do you want to feel sexy, regal, cute, or classy? Your desired feeling will influence the aesthetic of the design and help guide details such as the silhouette, fabric, and colors. Whether you’re aiming for a sultry vibe with a fitted silhouette or a more sophisticated look with clean lines and minimal embellishments, this question is crucial in shaping the overall design.

3. What Do You Want to Showcase About Your Body vs. What Do You Want to Camouflage?
Finally, think about what you want to highlight and what you’d prefer to downplay. Do you love your shoulders and want to show them off with an off-the-shoulder design? Or maybe you’d like to camouflage your hips with a dress that emphasizes your waistline instead. This question ensures that the design makes you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin.

These three questions are essential to creating a dress that truly resonates with you. By focusing on where you’ll wear the dress, how you want to feel in it, and what you want to showcase about your body, you’ll be well on your way to designing a piece that you’ll cherish for years to come.
