Get ready. I’m going to talk about pockets again.
I know you’ve either seen or been a part of this exact scene: One woman says to another women “I like your dress” and the woman wearing the dress says “Oh, thanks, it has pockets!” and the first woman is equally excited about the pockets and even more intrigued with the dress.
Let me give you another scene from this past weekend: Over Christmas I got a “boyfriend” flannel shirt. It’s very cozy and comfy, the boyfriend style referring to a baggier shape. I told my husband, I love the flannel but that it’s very clear it’s a woman’s shirt using the “boyfriend” descriptor. He asked me what I meant. I said “Well, it doesn’t have the pocket on the front”. Being well versed in my pocket frustration he said “Oh, yeah, you’re right” but then followed it up with “but, you know, I never really use those”. I quickly pointed out “of course you don’t, because the pants you’re wearing gives you 17 other usable pockets to choose from.”
Pockets trigger excitement in women because they’re shared with us like they’re some rare commodity. It’s like the addition of pockets in our clothing is going to cause the word to run out of fabric. And yet men's clothing is peppered with them.
Men’s clothing don’t just have more pockets, their pockets on average are about twice the size of ours.
Rampant inclusion of pockets in men's outfits makes the absence in ours so much more rage inducing. It feels personal. These personal feelings fuel my work.
In my perfect world, I want to make a dress (or pants) for every woman that has ever been frustrated by the clothing options offered to her. I want to make her a garment that she feels amazing in, that feels comfortable and functional. I want each one of those women to feel amazing, because it kills me just how often women’s clothing tears them down and invalidates their needs. I want to give every woman that wants a dress with pockets exactly that – a dress with pockets.
But I know not every woman is able to invest $400 or more in a dress. And that’s why my pocket kits truly matter to me so much.
I think they’re cute. I think they’re a fun craft to do. I love that they could make a dress, a bag, a coat – whatever – unique and feel special. But more than anything I love that it could get a woman a step closer to the clothing design they already deserve, at a price that is attainable for almost anybody.
That is why this month’s giveaway is a pocket kit to two separate winners. The winners will get to choose their pocket shape (circle or scalloped edge) and print from 20 different combinations.
Enter below - it takes about 60 seconds.
Along with the pocket kits, I will be sending out vibes of love to all the women that I think deserve functional pockets.
