The Escape of a Good Outfit

Clothing is an escape for me. Not in the retail therapy way. That implies blowing a bunch of money on random pieces of clothing. I like the distraction and challenge of a more focused approach.

On days where I’m exhausted and a lot feels out of my control, a good outfit gives me back a piece of myself. On these days, I’m turning to what I have in my closet to put together something that makes me feel a bit more human. I might be a total mess on the inside, but at least I feel like a BOSS on the outside.

It feels like my adult version of dress up. I’m not putting star stickers on my face or prancing around in jelly heels (those were the days), but I AM going to curate a cute outfit, do my hair, and add LOTS of eye make up to my face.

Constructing an outfit like this might sound like some surface level avoidance tactic, but it’s not. Escape and avoidance are not the same thing. It’s a break, a shift in perspective, a chance to recover. For me, it feels like a salve to take the edge off of struggles we face. So many struggles that so many of us are navigating.

These are some of my favorite shifts that can come from a good outfit on a bad day:

  • It’s a shift in focus from feeling bad, to at least one thing feeling good in your body.

  • It’s an act of total control when you may be facing situations in your life where you have little control.

  • It’s a tiny positive encouragement from your outside self saying to your inside self “we look amazing, we’ve got this”.

  • It’s a way to take up physical space and to be noticed by others when you’ve been feeling invisible or small.

  • It’s a way to start a conversation with a stranger when you’ve been feeling alone.

  • It’s a return to simplicity when your whole life feels crazy or complicated.

It’s easy to dismiss fashion as superficial, but haven’t you witnessed at least a couple of these shifts before - either in yourself or in a friend? On the days when you’re just trying to make it to the end of the day because things are so tough, the tiniest positive can feel like a beacon of hope.

Seems way more than superficial to me.
